    (ShareCast News) - 1630 (close): The FTSE 100 ended down 1.68% to 5,979.20 as China's economic slowdown continued to weigh on investors' minds. The People's Bank of China said today it would pump 140 billion yuan into the financial system through a short-term liquidity adjustment operation. The move follows the central bank's decision on Tuesday to cut interest rates for the third time since November. However, the measures failed to soothe worries about the shrinking economy when sent global stocks tumbling on "Black Monday". On the upside, data showed a pick up in UK mortgage lending and approvals while the US enjoyed a unexpected increase in US durable goods orders. Company-wise Weir Group, RBS and ARM Holdings rallied while WPP slumped.
